Hinkley Point C – Nuclear Power Station
Overview
BaseOne automated project controls reporting for a global energy company on the Hinckley Point C nuclear power station.
The Customer
Active in the UK energy market for over 20 years, Engie is a French multinational utility company, headquartered in France. Engie operates in the fields of energy transition, electricity generation and distribution, natural gas, nuclear, renewable energy, and petroleum.
It is one of the few players in the sector to develop expert skills in both upstream (engineering, purchasing, operation, maintenance) and downstream (waste management, dismantling) activities.
Engie supplies electricity in twenty-seven countries in Europe and forty-eight countries worldwide.
The Challenge
Engie had scope to manufacture thousands of HVAC systems for the Hinkley Point C site. The scope included the design, manufacture, and delivery of each item, plus logistics for transport between manufacture, testing and delivery.
Engie needed detailed scheduling in Primavera P6 and regular reporting to support the daily operations.
Due to the amount of schedule, documentation, quality and resource management, there was lots of siloed departmental data generated. This took a large amount of time to gather and report for the team, who spent a large portion of their time, creating, and updating reports.
A better solution was needed to help people report and give time back to the team to focus on their work.
Our Solution
BaseOne embedded two people into the Engie team. They created a suite of Power BI reports and simple ETL process that gathered data from many sources, including Primavera P6 XERs for baseline and actual projects containing 100k+ activities.
A single data model was developed that combined all data across documentation, planning, cost, and quality departments.
We created a of suite of Power BI reports that provided insights and reporting for senior management, managers and team members that tracked all activity, performance, documentation, quality, testing and logistics.
We enabled Agile delivery and trained team members, helping them move into bi-weekly delivery cadences with a focus on continuous improvement.

What the Client Said
Working with BaseOne was an excellent experience. We had two developers from BaseOne who took on our challenges and made an impact with a new Engie branded reporting platform.
As a result, our teams were able to spend more time working on delivering quality work instead of crunching numbers, and as a bonus we removed expensive software licences that were no longer needed within the project for P6 and XER readers.

We helped save an estimated nine thousand hours of team time during the five-year project lifecycle by automating the reporting process.
Engie saved £25k per year on licencing costs because of our data & analytics services.
